James Gallagher is a filmmaker.

As a photographer, Gallagher has worked in print, journalism, and editorial for VICE, Vogue, VOX, The Times of London, Little Brown, The New Yorker, and The New York Times. He served as the cinematographer on Kristen Stewart’s Take Me To the South, Clay and White by Hana, Monster by Balthazar Getty and Rain Phoenix, Amanda Demme’s campaign for Madeworn, and feature documentary, Election Day: Lens Across America for Blumhouse and Hulu.

As a director, he’s made advertisements, music videos, plays, documentaries, narratives, short films, and a feature. New Partner written by Josh Margolin and Quinn Beswick which was a Vimeo Staff Pick and won Best Comedy at the New York Television Festival, Chloe and Zoe for Fullscreen, and My Boyfriend is a Robot for Freeform. He's also directed branded pieces for VICE, Vox, Ray-Ban, La Quinta Hotels, Bay Alarm, Los Angeles Apparel, FCUK, and many more.

As writer/director, LOVE, a father and son story set in the world of competitive juniors tennis, (Will Hochman, Boris McGiver, Susan Sarandon) which premiered as a Vimeo Staff Pick and Short of the Week and PAULETTE, a documentary about a ballet teacher and former Radio City Music Hall Corps De Ballet soloist in the final year of her life which premiered in competition at the Big Sky Documentary Festival, on Vimeo as a Staff Pick, and at Short of the Week.

His documentary feature SONGS ABOUT FUCKING which follows Marc Rebillet on his Third Dose Tour premiered at the Tribeca Film Festival in 2023 and is set for “wide” release in 2025.
